About the Event

Ben Cosgrove of Portland, Maine, is the Volland Foundation’s first juried resident! Ben arrived on April 19th and leaves Kansas on May 3rd. Ben Cosgrove is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape, place, and environment. He has performed in every U.S. state except Delaware and Hawaii, and he has collaborated with other artists ranging from string ensembles to rock bands to essayists. Prior to his Volland Residency, Ben was a Tallgrass Artist Resident in Matfield Green, KS.. Ben has also held artist residencies and fellowships with institutions including the National Park Service, the National Forest Service, Harvard University, Middlebury College, the Schmidt Ocean Institute, NASA, and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. His fourth studio album, The Trouble With Wilderness, an evocation of various expressions of nature and wildness within the built environment, was released in 2021 and has been called "beautiful and fascinating" (The Maine Edge), "deeply impressive" (Independent Clauses) and "immediately evocative and fully arresting... brim[ming] with technical mastery and emotional capital" (Seven Days). Find more information on his website, www.bencosgrove.com. Ben expressed early in his residency he would enjoy performing for the community. He has many stories, and his time in Wabaunsee County has only added to the list (there’s one in particular involving a turkey). We look forward to seeing everyone for a fun night of music, learning, and conversation. Free will offering. Adult beverages and soda by donation.
