About the event

The Morris County Historical Society in conjunction with Humanities Kansas will be hosting “The Wizard Behind Oz,” a presentation and discussion by Chris Glasgow on Saturday, August 10, at 2 p.m. at the Carnegie Archives and Research Center, 303 W. Main in Council Grove.

If you’re from Kansas, you’ve surely encountered plenty of Wizard of Oz jokes and quips. “Where’s Dorothy?, You’re not in Kansas anymore!, I’m melting!” But what you may not know is the fascinating story behind L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” This talk explores the unique appeal of this first truly American fairy tale, and its legacy on our culture from speech, to music, to media. This presentation pulls back the curtain on Baum’s crowning achievement.

Chris serves as curator at the Oz Museum and Columbia Theatre Foundation in Wamego. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and holds a Certificate in Small Museum Management and is progressing towards her Masters Degree in Children’s Theatre.

This presentation coincides with Second Saturday events in downtown Council Grove on August 10. The community is invited to attend this free program. Donations for the Morris County Historical Society will be accepted at the door. For more information about this program, or information about MCHS, please call the Society at 620-767-7388.
