Overview:  We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented team member to join our Feed and Maintenance Department in Herington, KS. If you've got a strong passion for animal husbandry and you enjoy a faster moving environment that relies heavily on teamwork and a positive attitude, then you'll fit right in!  Specific Duties May Include:  Load, mix, and deliver feed rations according to feed delivery softwares Properly distribute specific cattle rations to their respective pen Operate feed truck and related equipment safely and efficiently Perform routine equipment inspections and maintenance daily, and report mechanical issues promptly Monitor feed bunks during delivery and report abnormalities Maintain cleanliness of truck, mixer, and feeding areas Communicate effectively and respectfully with feed management and livestock personnel Operate equipment such as loaders, skid steers, tractors, and haul trucks Haul and manage compost and manure as part of pen maintenance Repair and maintain feed bunks, fencing, gates, water systems, and facility infrastructure Support pen cleaning and yard maintenance efforts Assist with snow removal and weather-related yard needs Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas Adhere to all safety protocols and company procedures Experience:  Preferred at least 2 years of livestock experience.  Environment and Physical Demands:  Rain or shine, cattle always need fed! Weather/seasonal conditions may be harsher than others, but it is up to us to make sure these cattle are properly cared for, even when the radar doesn't seem appealing.  Prepare for some physical demands that may include walking or standing for long periods of time, and moving heavy objects.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities   

Grounds maintenance duties include use of hand tools and light power tools for vegetation clearing, painting, surface prep, debris/litter removal, tree cutting, and weeding. Interns will move materials by wheelbarrow or hand truck, load/unload trucks, and perform minor equipment servicing and routine upkeep of recreation and wildlife sites. Visitor services duties include answering public inquiries, and conducting interpretive presentations on Corps missions, history, and project operations. Interns will register campers, direct traffic, and develop and maintain informational and educational materials. Inspection duties include checking recreation areas for vandalism, unsafe conditions, safety hazards and unauthorized use. Intern will also assist with forestry, fisheries, and habitat assessments; collect data on water quality, vegetation, noxious weeds, and wildlife/fish populations; and support habitat work and environmental compliance monitoring.    

Marginal Duties   

Additional duties include assisting with first aid, boating, and emergency response, and working alongside Corps staff, volunteers, and external organizations as needed.    

Required Qualifications   

Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license. Must complete defensive driving training provided by the government. Must have the ability to work outdoors and lift up to 40 pounds. Must be able to safely operate hand and power tools. Preferred Qualifications   Comfortable with receiving/following instructions from staff. Comfortable engaging with visiting public. Flexible schedule to work weekends and holidays.

Compensation   

$500 weekly Living Allowance $25 weekly Commuting Allowance $650 monthly Housing Allowance $650 to/from travel reimbursement* (if non-local) All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.     

*SCA positions with the US Army Corps of Engineers will receive a To/From Site travel reimbursement that reflects the actual roundtrip travel costs from their 'home' to the site. The reimbursement amount is based upon total distance (mileage) travelled and current federal per diem rates. Members are required to submit an expense report to SCA with documented round-trip travel costs for reimbursement.
