MAIN STREET BEST PRACTICES

We’ve compiled a list of helpful tricks and tips for our Main Street, Council Grove business community. These aren’t rules but helpful hints for maintaining and augmenting our historic downtown.

TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBORS!

Coordinate things like open hours, window display changes, seasonal events, and more. You’ll inspire and augment each other!

ENCOURAGE THE USE OF REUSABLE BAGS

Reduce waste and litter on our Main Street. Encourage your customers to use reusable bags to bring home their purchases. Extra points if you sell your own branded option! These make great advertising tools and are an easy up-sell at checkout.

SIGNAGE

Remember, before hanging those big, new storefront signs, you must get a sign permit from City Hall. You can find the form HERE.

We recommend additional, temporary, and eye-catching signage be used whenever possible. Great feather and a-frame signs are on the market at very reasonable prices. Our Main Street is extra-wide, and these types of signs help visitors know exactly how much we have going on. For those of you off the beaten path, talk to your neighboring businesses about putting directional signage out for your business. We’re all in this together!

EXTERIOR DISPLAYS OF MERCHANDISE

While this can be an ever-changing, eye-catching way to draw attention to your business, remember a few best practices.

Don’t let the products sprawl more than 18” out into the sidewalk.
Don’t leave anything unattended.
Don’t put anything out that children should touch.
Do be prepared with a replacement item, because these things are known to sell fast!
Do choose items with bright colors that stand out from your business storefront.
Do set up sample stations outside! Use this space to entice guests through your doors by offering a small taste of what’s inside.

HOLIDAY DECOR

A long-standing Council Grove tradition has been rooftops and windows lined with warm, white Christmas lights. Keep this tradition alive and make sure your building’s lights are in good working order each October.

If you switch to LEDs, select the “Warm White” as the “cool white” casts a more blue glow.

WINDOW FLYERS, POSTERS, STICKERS

Council Grove and Morris County love their flyers and posters. Check your windows frequently to be sure you are not advertising events that are long over.

Make sure your Council Grove Area Trade & Tourism membership sticker is proudly displayed! We create new ones annually to show our community our strong partnerships. Email information@councilgrove.com if you need a new membership sticker or a replacement.

Our Association typically passes out event posters on Tuesdays between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. If you are not available to receive them at these times, extras are always at our DESTINATION : Council Grove office. Or give us a call at 620.767.5413 — we’d be happy to make a special trip!
