Washunga 2023 : Things are Happening!

Our Washunga Days Festival Committee met on Monday evening at our office, DESTINATION : Council Grove. Meeting with this group is always so exciting for me! While my to-do list fills up pretty fast during this meeting, the rest of the committee is so inspiring to listen to. They have creative ideas and a passion for keeping and growing this beloved annual event in the Flint Hills.

2023 is looking like a year to remember! While I’m not going to spill the beans about our musical acts just yet, I can tell you some fun details that will surely warm your Washunga-loving heart!

Free wristbands for USD 417 (that’s homeschooled kids, too!) are back! Last year the Washunga Days Festival committee strategized their way into this idea, based on community feedback. We all know this festival has evolved passed the community festival of yesteryear, but the committee’s hope is that our local families can still continue to enjoy it for years to come. So free wristbands again in 2023 it is! Look for details coming soon!

Community Night is back too! Mark those calendars for Thursday, June 15th, and join us at the Neosho Riverwalk for an evening with the food vendors you love, some tunes, and a fun surprise for the kiddos! This evening is FREE, and a gift from the committee to our community.

Festival favorites like the fireworks from Stars & Stripes Fireworks, the parade, the kids’ activities, the car show, and more are all making their return. Plus, this will be year two of the Washunga Flea at The Dealership Building — a great place to shop for unique junk, oops, I mean treasures!

New this year will be the debut of the Flint Hills Artisan Fair! Located on the Eastside of Main Street, in Council Oak Park, this juried vendor fair will feature Flint Hills makers with items you will love owning and giving. Applications to join this amazing new initiative will be available beginning later this week. When it goes live, we’ll share where to access it on our Facebook page (@CouncilGroveKS). This will be a can’t-miss stop, and just like the Washunga Flea, no wristband required!

Don’t forget, the intertribal powwow at Allegawaho Park will be on both Friday and Saturday. We’ll be offering trolley rides to and fro! This part of the festival is my personal favorite. So much meaning, beauty, and fun! Seriously, if you haven’t experienced it yet, make this your year.

We know you’re most curious about our musical acts! And, while I would love to spill that tea right now, my lips are sealed! You’ll have to wait just a bit longer, but I promise, it will be so worth it! Any guesses on who’s coming?

Washunga Days are Friday & Saturday, June 16th & 17th. Be there! I know I will!
